City lands federal funding for three projects

Thursday, December 10, 2009
Contact: Jan Bader, City Manager's Office, (360) 487-8606

The City of Vancouver secured over $2.7 million in federal funding for three projects after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Omnibus Appropriations Bill today. Included in the bill are funding for Vancouver's waterfront access project, a road construction project in east Vancouver, and a new law enforcement records management system. The bill will now be sent to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

The following three projects were included in the bill:

Downtown Vancouver Waterfront Access Project - $1,948,000
Senators Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell and Congressman Baird collectively secured this funding. It will create the access necessary to allow development to occur on over 40 acres along Vancouver's West Columbia River Waterfront. Once the access is created, the private investment on the waterfront is estimated to total $1.3 billion. The project includes construction of two new grade-separated BNSF main railway under-crossings as well as an extension of the existing waterfront multi-use trail.

Mill Plain – 136th Avenue Intersection - $300,000
Congressman Baird and Sen. Patty Murray secured the funding for this project which will complete construction of improvements to increase safety at this heavily-congested intersection. It will add more left and right turn lanes to accommodate turning traffic and increase the carrying capacity of the intersection. By increasing traffic capacity, the city will be able to lift the current moratorium on development of adjacent available land.

Vancouver Police - Records Management System -$500,000
The funds will be used to replace the current law and justice records system, to include transferring the data from the existing system to the new one. A new records management system will allow law enforcement agencies throughout Clark County to perform better crime analysis, deploy personnel in a more efficient manner, share information more effectively and provide enhanced protection to the community.

Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard thanked the Congressional delegation for their support of these projects. "The waterfront renaissance project is just one example of how federal participation in a local project can spur significant economic development. We appreciate the support of Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell and Congressman Baird – they always come through for America's Vancouver," said Pollard.
