Jonah Edelman at WSUV Lecture Series

April 21, 2009
Time: 7 PM

The Sherry Vaughan Distinguished Lecture Series welcomes Jonah Edelman, CEO of Stand for Children, to Washington State University Vancouver at 7 p.m. April 21 in the Administration building, room 110.

Edelman's address, "Despite the Downturn: How Can We Position Schools for Progress?" will focus on Stand for Children's efforts to support Washington public schools. Stand for Children is committed to achieving statewide policy changes for children and education. Members have achieved a number of important education reforms and leveraged more than $2.3 billion in public funding for programs that are improving the lives of more than 2.5 million children. Edelman's personal stand for children began when he taught a six-year-old bilingual child in New Haven, Conn. to read. He has since run a teen pregnancy prevention speakers' bureau, founded a mentorship program for middle school students and served as administrator of an enrichment program for children living in public housing. Edelman graduated from Yale University in 1992 and attended Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, where in three years he earned a master's and a doctor of philosophy degree in politics.

The Sherry Vaughan Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored this year by WSU Vancouver's Department of Education and by Stand for Children.
