Join the community for a week of service and celebration in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.

The City of Vancouver and Clark County Public Works will join forces with Clark College, WSU Vancouver and numerous community agencies to provide a variety of service projects throughout the city and the county.

Scheduled activities and volunteer opportunities:

Evergreen School District Foundation's Pantry Project: 

The City of Vancouver and Evergreen School District Foundation will help fill food pantries and the bellies of students and families at Evergreen School District during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. 

Between Jan. 13-20, food barrels will be located at:

  • City of Vancouver City Hall – 415 W. 6th Street
  • Firstenburg Community Center - 700 NE 136th Ave.
  • City of Vancouver Operation Center - 4711 E. Fourth Plain Blvd.
  • Marshall Community Center & Luepke Senior Center - 1009 E. McLoughlin Blvd
  • Vancouver Police West Precinct – 2800 NE Stapleton Rd 98661
  • Water Resources Education Center – 4600 SE Columbia Way
  • New Season Market – 2100 SE 164th Ave.
  • Jan. 20 only: Vancouver Lake Trail Expansion Volunteer project, 6801 NE Lower River Road 

Community members are encouraged to generously donate non-perishable food & toiletries. On numerous days throughout the week volunteers are also needed to pickup and transport food. On Jan. 23, volunteers will collect, sort, package and distribute the food to one of six pantries in the Evergreen School District.

Vancouver Lake Park Cleanup and Trail Expansion

On Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., join Clark County Parks as they make a difference in our community by cleaning up a local watershed and expanding a trail system to increase opportunities for healthy living.

At this event volunteers will install a new mile long section of trail and clean up trash from the area surrounding beautiful Vancouver Lake. Please bring a non-perishable food item to the event to donate to the food drive sponsored by the City of Vancouver. Please meet at Vancouver Lake Regional Park, 6801 NE Lower River Road. Leave a legacy, plant a tree with the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance

Monday, Jan. 20, 8 am - 12 pm

Volunteers will meet at Fort Vancouver High School and plant trees and perform restoration work along the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway.  For more information and to sign up visit the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance website here

Vancouver Water Center Invasive Plant Removal

Enjoy the fresh crisp January air and give to Vancouver wetlands at the Water Resources Education Center on Monday, Jan. 20, from 9:30 am to 12 pm.

Volunteers will participate in invasive plant removal and restoration activities in the wetlands near the Water Resources Education Center.

Women and Poverty: Dispelling Myths and Breaking the Cycle

Monday, Jan. 20,  9 am - 12:30 pm, Washington State University Vancouver

Make it a “day on” at the WSU Vancouver Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event! The event will include a keynote speech from Dr. Desiree Hellegers, author of No Room of Her Own: Women's Stories of Homelessness, Life, Death, and Resistance; music from the Hudson’s Bay High School choir, interactive workshops, and fun and educational activities for kids. Attendees are encouraged to bring small household items and/or hygiene products which will be donated to Share Vancouver and Vida’s Ark. More information at www.vancouver.wsu.edu/mlk.

Clark College MLK, Jr. Day Event

Join Clark College for a celebration and service day in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Schedule of Clark College events:

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Keynote by Lee Mun Wah, Gaiser Student Center

1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - Student Dialogue with Lee Mun Wah, Penguin Union Building (PUB) 161

2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. - Service Project: Boys and Girls Club, Washington Elementary RSVP: Mcleary@clark.edu, 992.2447

5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. - Film showing of "If These Halls Could Talk"  followed by discussion with Lee Mun Wah Gaiser Student Center. Light refreshments served.

"A Peace That Surpasses All Understanding"

Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on January 18.

Our annual Dr. King Breakfast Celebration started in January 2010 and has become an event celebrated by Vancouver and Portland community members, labor unions, business leaders and elected officials.  We thank them all for the continued support in honoring Dr. King's life and legacy.  Our next celebration will focus on the violence in the community and across the country and how Dr. King's quest for peace is still a designation.  To learn more visit the event webpage here
