KIRO, CNN Provide Timely Programs

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

While Seattle "news junkies" know that KIRO newscasts from Seattle air on CVTV 21, seven days a week, several times a day, not everyone is aware of this public affairs service offered by CVTV.

Historically, KIRO local news aired 5 days a week on one of the commercial cable channels operated by the cable company.  However, late last year Comcast dropped the service to make room for the Comcast Sports Network.  Boy, did viewers let Comcast and the City/County Cable TV office know they wanted their Seattle news!  Besides "exiles" from the Puget Sound, it is also important for the whole community to get information about Washington state, not just Portland and Oregon news on local broadcast channels.  With Comcast's permission, the Cable TV Office was able to negotiate an agreement with KIRO to carry their daily newscasts and other public affairs programming on CVTV 21.

Not only does CVTV 21 carry the early morning, mid-day, early evening, and 11 PM KIRO newscasts, but we also air other public affairs and special non-network/CBS programming such as Seafair and a 50th Anniversary Special on KIRO.  It is one way that people can feel more connected to the rest of our state and not get confused between the political systems in Oregon and Washington!  For air times, check cvtv.org.

While we always hope that CVTV will be viewers' first choice for Vancouver/Clark County information, we know that you have lots of programming options.  Tonight and tomorrow night CNN will be airing two programs in its "Black in America" series.  Reported and anchored by Soledad O'Brien, the series explores real issues with real people.  It promises to be thought provoking and a catylst for conversations.  CNN is also providing an online discussion guide for parents and teachers to accompany the series.  For more information just go to cnn.com and click on the "Black in America" link.
