Capt. Vancouver Statue
Vancouver's namesake is honored with this statue at 6th and Esther Streets. Capt. George Vancouver commanded a British expedition to map the Pacific coast in 1792. After learning of Capt. Robert Gray's discovery of the Columbia River, Vancouver sent one of his lieutenants, William Broughton, to explore the river. Broughton noted "Point Vancouver" on his map, giving the city that would rise there its name.
