Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Lawry wants Vancouver residents and businesspeople to check their Cadet in-wall heaters for recalled models.
"I still find recalled wall heaters while doing inspections," says Lawry. "Since I'm still finding them in business setting, I assume they're still out there in residential setting, too. People need to take a look at their heaters to make sure they aren't on the recall list. They can pose a fire hazard."
Lawry is part of a team of Vancouver Fire Department inspectors. He conducts business inspections to help insure that businesses are in compliance with fire and life safety codes. Schools, theaters and other places of public assembly are high on his priority list for safety inspections.
Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Lawry assisted a Vancouver business with the identification and replacement of a recalled Cadet in-wall heater.
The fire department and Cadet Manufacturing encourage consumers to check model numbers of their Cadet in-wall heaters and to promptly replace recalled units. Nearly 2 million Cadet and Encore brand in-wall heaters were recalled on February 17, 2000. The models recalled were: FW, FX, LX, TK, ZA, Z, RA, RK, RLX, RW, RX, and ZC. These models should be replaced, regardless of manufacture or purchase date. The brand and model are located on a label on the front of the heat box, behind the grill. Before removing the grill to check the identification label, consumers must disconnect the power supply to the heater at the circuit breaker. If power is not disconnected, consumers risk electrocution and shock.
The Cadet website has further information on identifying, cleaning, or purchasing Cadet heaters. For additional recall information, consumers may call Cadet’s recall hotline at (800) 567-2613 or visit the firm's website at www.cadetco.com. Information is also available on the Consumer Product Safety Commissions web site at www.cpsc.gov
A two-year safety recall program, jointly announced by Cadet and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, ended February 17, 2002. No additional Cadet wall heaters have been recalled since February 2000. Consumers with recalled heaters who did not participate in the recall program are urged to replace their heaters. Cadet products are available through participating retail outlets such as hardware and home improvement stores.
