Walnut Grove Fire House/5 is the headquarters for the Vancouver Fire Department. The fire chief and his command staff have their offices at this station. We also house the fire marshal, equipment services division, special operations and general staff.

Engine 5, flowing waterWalnut Grove is staffed 24/7/365 by six career firefighters who work 24-hour shifts. A fire engine and a heavy rescue vehicle carry the tools necessary to complete their work.

Headquarters campus

When you drive by the station, you might notice the training tower. The tower is a three-story structure used for high-rise, fire suppression and rescue training in smoky conditions. It is also used for high-angle rope rescue and special operations training. The facility is used daily by career staff to hone their many skills. The training grounds are also used to teach community members who belong to the CERT (Community Emergeny Response Team) program.

The Equipment Services Division is located on site, and maintains and repairs all Vancouver Fire Department fire engines and other equipment.

Walnut Grove Fire House is also headquarters for Special Operations. Personnel are trained in special disciplines, such as hazadous materialss response, high-angle rope rescue, swift water rescue and urban search and rescue. Each of these disciplines requires maintenance of certifications and annual continuing education training. We are the Region 4 responder for these services to surrounding Washington counties.

Fire apparatus

In addition to a fire engine and the heavy rescue vehicle, our fire house has an air unit, rehab unit, hazardous materials response unit, foam tender and two reserve fire engines. These apparatus are needed to protect public safety and property at large incidents requiring extended scene times or with other unique challenges.

Our Service Area

Walnut Grove Fire House is the second busiest station the in the department. Our primary response area covers 8.9 square miles and serves a population of over 32,000 people. Last year we responded to over 5,000 emergency calls for help.

Special characterics of the area we serve

Our service area is comprised of a mix of residential, large commercial retail and offices, dense senior housing and apartments. Major roadways include I-205, SR 500 and the Padden Expressway. This variety of properties and transit corridors presents unique challenges for motor vehicle accidents and unique fire situations such as vehicle fires and threatening grass fires along the roadways. These situations pose some of the most serious safety hazards for the community and for firefighters.
