Growing Groceries Mentor Program – Garden education
The Growing Groceries Mentor Program is a new Clark County collaborative effort focused on
training and linking experienced gardeners to serve as mentors in community-based food garden programs.
Volunteers participated in classroom based training early in 2010 to learn about basic vegetable
gardening and working with community groups, and now have the skills to act as mentors to assist
food gardeners in their attempts at growing their own bounty! Growing Groceries Mentors can help
gardeners of all varieties by providing answers to basic questions, helping with plant selection,
and providing motivation and support.
If you have any questions, or would like the help of a mentor,
please contact Ariel Rivers.
This program was developed through joint efforts of Clark County, WSU Clark County Extension,
Vancouver-Clarks Parks and Recreation and other community garden advocates.

Alternative Sites
The Clark County Gardens
Located in the 2000 block of NE 78th Street, this property used to be the site of the County's
"poor farm", where poverty stricken families lived and worked during the early part of the 20th Century.
It was deeded to WSU for agricultural research in 1949. Ownership reverted back to the County in 2008. A
committment to the property's history, combined with a modern vision for sustainable practices and
community access, resulted in the opening of community gardens there in 2010.

The Rose Village Neighborhood Garden
This garden, at 39th and P Streets in Vancouver, is a volunteer lead effort to bring food garden options
closer to the local residents. This project is lead by a non-profit, Americans Building Community, based
here in Vancouver. The garden has 10 -15 plots available. There are also five raised beds for families
on state assistance. These beds come with seeds, tools, education on the Square foot Gardening Method and
a garden mentor to teach and guide. Scholarships are available. No one is turned away because of
inability to pay. Garden mentors are available for larger plots as well. First preference is given to those
living in the Rose Village Neighborhood.
Please contact Toree Hiebert for more information, or call 360-907-5814.
The Fort Vancouver Garden The Fort Vancouver Garden is an
organic, interpretive garden
representing the type of garden
that would have been grown at the original Fort Vancouver in the 1840's. Volunteers receive
the surplus produce after it has been distributed to Share House and the Fort kitchen.
To participate in the planting, weeding and harvesting, you are required to
fill out a Volunteer Agreement. Feel free to inquire.
