Volunteer Success Stories

Salmon Team

Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation Department currently employs a five-member, AmeriCorps team to assist the department in managing thousands of acres of critical habitat throughout Clark County. The "Watershed Team" is focused primarily in the East Fork of the Lewis River Greenway, working on various planting and restoration projects, volunteer coordination, environmental education, management planning and site assessments.

Currently, the Team is working on a 3.5-acre planting project along the East Fork, southeast of La Center. Expanding upon a previous project, the team is planting a riparian buffer area along the river, with the goal of enhancing the area to support the recovery of salmonids and other riparian-dependant species.

In 2001, the Team provided environmental education to an 8th grade class of Wy'East Middle School students. The students learned the value and benefits of restoring habitat, learned about various species of native plants, and planted an area in small groups.

If you or your group are interested in learning more about Clark County's efforts to restore and rehabilitate critical salmon habitat, please contact Brian Potter at 360-619-1123.
