Kate & Clarence LaLonde Neighborhood Park
Park planning & background information
This 7.7-acre property is located on NE 99th Street just west of 50th Avenue in Northeast Hazel Dell. LaLonde Creek crosses the northeast corner of the property and the LaLonde family pastures horses and cattle on their property next to the park.
A small covered picnic shelter included in the conceptual plan can be added to the park in the future through community fundraising or donations. To find out more about donating to this park, contact the Parks Foundation at (360) 487-8370.
What's in a name?
The county agreed to name the future park in honor of Kate and Clarence LaLonde when it purchased the property from the family in 1999. Clarence LaLonde first bought the land from the state in 1911. His family used the property for a variety of agricultural purposes for nearly 100 years, before selling it to the county for use as a future park. As of 2011, Kate and Clarence's son and grandchildren still live on the property west of the park.
Public Participation
Project staff relied on public participation to help guide park layout during the design process. Your input:
- Helped us understand and respond to the needs and concerns of your neighborhood.
- Helped us understand which park features were most important to you and your neighbors.
- Helped us learn about the potential for community fundraising and volunteer projects to add features to the park.
The first project newsletter and comment form was mailed out to neighbors in March 2009. Several different preliminary concept plans were subsequently presented to neighbors for review and input at a public meeting on April 23, 2009 and through this Web page.
A newsletter featuring an updated proposed concept plan was mailed to neighbors for review and additional input in early June 2009. The final concept plan was approved by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission at a public meeting in July 2009.
In Feburary 2010, neighbors were invited to provide input about the playground equipment selected for this park. In July 2010, neighbors received a letter announcing the start of construction.

Project Funding
Design and construction of Kate and Clarence LaLonde Neighborhood Park was funded by park impact fees, which are paid whenever a new residential property is developed, and the real estate excise tax, which is paid whenever property is sold. Maintenance of the park is funded by the Greater Clark Parks District, a special district approved by voters in the unincorporated urban area of Clark County in 2005.
