Vancouver PAL distributes over 1000 books

Press Release Date:

The Vancouver Police Activities League (PAL) hosts a literacy event at a different elementary school each month during the school year. On June 10, 2014, Vancouver PAL held the final literacy event for this school year. From October-June, Vancouver PAL distributed over 1000 free books to second grade students in both the Vancouver and Evergreen school districts with the goal to promote reading, as well as build positive relationships between police officers and youth. Police officers not only distribute the books, read to the kids, and bring along specialty vehicles for the students to see, but also give the classes a safety talk at the start of each event and answer questions from the students.

This year, in addition to officers from the Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver PAL also partnered with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office to host literacy events at schools in the county.

The schools that participated this school year included:

Mill Plain
Burnt Bridge Creek
Fruit Valley

Silver Star
Hazel Dell
Burnt Bridge Creek

Vancouver PAL provides year around activities for youth and has multiple activities and events planned for the summer months. The PAL literacy program will start up again in the fall. Members of the media are always welcome to attend any PAL activities.

Vancouver PAL is a non-profit organization that partners with the Vancouver Police Department to promote positive relationships between police officers and youth in the community through educational programs and recreational opportunities. The goal of PAL is to reduce juvenile crime rates and empower our youth to make responsible life choices that promote positive growth, through life-enriching, productive, and meaningful activities, while forming positive relationships with law enforcement.
