Jeanne Stewart to be first Vancouver resident inducted into statewide Recycling Hall of Fame

Press Release Date:
Monday, May 5, 2014

One of Vancouver’s own -- Jeanne Stewart, former member of the Vancouver City Council and the Clark County Solid Waste Advisory Commission --  will be inducted into the Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA) Hall of Fame during an awards banquet 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, at Hilton Vancouver Washington, 301 W. Sixth St.

The WSRA Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made outstanding long-term contributions to recycling in the state of Washington. New inductees are selected by a committee of Hall of Fame members and spotlighted at the organization’s annual awards banquet each May.

Stewart becomes the first resident of Vancouver and the larger Clark County area to be inducted into the Recycling Hall of Fame since the recognition program began in 2000.

During her years on the Vancouver City Council from January 2002 to December 2013, Stewart served on the Clark County Solid Waste Advisory Commission providing input and direction on recycling and waste prevention programs. Her dedication to recycling, however, dates back to the early 1990s, as a volunteer serving on a citizens committee that helped establish recycling efforts in Clark County. Stewart is being recognized for her support and efforts to increase recycling volumes and reduce waste to landfills through a multitude of programs, including enhanced education and outreach, curbside yard debris collection, hazardous and special waste collections, and curbside and multi-family recycling collection programs.

“Vancouver’s successful solid waste and recycling programs owe much to the commitment and support of our City Council,” said Brian Carlson, Vancouver Public Works director. “During her years on the Council and as a citizen volunteer, Jeanne Stewart served as a tireless advocate for improving recycling and reducing waste. Her dedication can be seen in the programs that continue to benefit our community today.”
