The Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “At the Controls: The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Looks at Cockpits,” will be on display through Feb. 8 at Pearson Air Museum, 1115 East Fifth Street, Vancouver.

The exhibit features 20 full color, life-sized photographs of historic aircraft. It gives the viewer the feeling of being in the pilot's seat. It demonstrates the simplicity of early cockpits-often with only a wooden steering wheel or stick-compared to the myriad lights and dials of today's space shuttle. To further allow aircraft enthusiasts to get a closer look   at cockpits, the museum has installed OSHA approved stairs that allow museum visitors to climb up to get a pilot's view of three historic aircraft on display.

“We wanted to give people the opportunity to see the cockpit photos in the Smithsonian exhibit and then climb up and look at some vintage cockpits close up. We're excited to host this exhibit in its only Oregon and SW Washington stop,” said Kyle Kihs, director of Pearson Air Museum.

Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors or active military with I.D., $3 for children ages 6-12, children under six are free.
