Business Notes
Chutneys
by Mary Jayne Weil
If you’re up for something new and a bit exotic, you must try Chutneys, an Indian restaurant in Fishers Landing in Vancouver.
Newly opened in October, the menu is varied and interesting. The atmosphere is quietly modern with a surprisingly spacious dining room.
The prices range from $3 for Onion Kulcha, described as Tandoor baked bread stuffed with mildly spiced onions and a touch of butter, to Shrimp Biryani, served with basmati rice cooked in saffron and a blend of spices at $14.99. Five South Indian specials are on the menu, each served with lentil soup and chutney. They are variously described as rice cakes, lentil doughnuts, rice crepes with potato filling, and Uthappam, which are lentil crepes with onions, green chilies and ginger, priced at $6.99.
The Tandoor sizzlers are priced from $11.99 to $13.99. There are six chicken entrees and eight vegetarian entrees, each served with basmati rice, and range in price from $9.50 to $11.99.
Although the service was slow, the servers were friendly and helpful in making selections. The chef also visited the dining room, briefly greeting each patron. The food was absolutely delicious, and it's a treat to know that such good and unusual fare is offered locally.
Chutneys is at 3000 S.E. 164th Ave., Ste. 100, 360 254-7254; closed Mondays, open Tuesday to Friday from 11:30; Saturdays at noon. A take-out menu is available, and they offer catering for special events and corporate lunches.
