Cascade Grill offers home-style food at Jubitz

by Greg Johnson

There are times, when dark, dreary Northwest days seem to drag on and on. With no tropical sojourn in sight, sometimes a Portland adventure can offer a change of pace and bring some sunshine into your life.

Portlander Inn and Marketplace at Jubitz Travel Center, located just off I-5 Exit 307 and Marine Drive in North Portland, warrants a thorough exploration. The center, created with a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion in 2000, is almost a city unto itself. Professional truck drivers as well as business travelers and local patrons can find a myriad of services in one location.

Jubitz amenities include the 100-room Portlander Inn Hotel, Cascade Grill, the 80-seat Portlander Cinema with surround sound, video arcade, lottery services, 24-hour convenience store and gas station. It is also home to the legendary Ponderosa Lounge that features country western music and a large dance floor. In addition, Jubitz shoppers have access to a hair salon, medical center, chiropractor, shoe repair, and a coin-op and drop-off laundry service. RV parking and services are also available.

The Jubitz Cascade Grill restaurant, offers an expansive menu featuring a wide array of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals, as well as a full complement of appetizers. Knotty fir wood walls, a floor-to-ceiling, flagstone fireplace and cherry wood tables and booths add to the restaurant’s rustic lodge atmosphere.

For breakfast, there are plenty of big meal choices such as the Country Skillet for $9.50 with home fries, diced ham, bacon and sausage topped with two eggs and country gravy. Others may want to indulge in the Redneck Benedict with chicken-fried steak and two poached eggs served open-faced on biscuits; and, of course, all-you-can-eat biscuits and gravy.

Hearty eaters will also find a selection of Sunrise Classics featuring sausage and two eggs for $7.95; country-fried steak and eggs for $10.50; and the French Connection with Texas-style French toast, two eggs, and choice of bacon or sausage for $8.50.

On the lighter side, you can order hot oatmeal or cold cereal for $2.95 from 5 to 11 a.m. daily, a Belgian waffle for $5.25 or a fruit cup for $2.95.

Cascade Grill also offers a “lite fare” dinner menu featuring a poached salmon filet with steamed vegetables for $9.95 and grilled lemon chicken with steamed vegetables and rice pilaf for $8.50.

The full dinner offerings include house specialties such as chicken cordon bleu with ham and Swiss cheese served on a bed of fettuccine for $11.95 or spaghetti with meatballs for $8.50. Homestyle dinners feature pot roast with braised carrots, celery, onions and potatoes and a choice of soup or salad for $10.50, and Jubitz’ famous, country fried steak with salad, vegetables and French fries or mashed potatoes for $11.50.

Other Cascade Grill dinner menu items include steaks, chops and seafood priced from $11.50 for chopped sirloin dinner to $17.95 for the steak and shrimp combo. A full slate of burgers, sandwiches and salads also grace the menu.

Jubitz Travel Center is located at 10350 North Vancouver Way. For information, go to portlanderinn.com or call 503-345-0300.
