White Sturgeon Art Gallery
Now Showing Jan 8, 2010 through Feb 27, 2010
Explore the work of paper-and-assemblage artist Uta Fehlhaver-Smith, whose groups of work incorporate handmade paper, found objects and digital photography.
"Border Hyphens" are collages of found objects along the Rio Grande with paper made from cotton.
“Water Under the Bridge” incorporates sheets made with water samples from various locals along the San Antonio River, along with digital photos showing the various stages of pollution. The photography is printed on paper using the water drawn from those locals. A vial of sample water for each image completes the study at each location.
A featured work, Raindance I, was created as part of the paper-making process. Pigments were laid down onto the surface of the fibers and joined with them in the paper press during the forming of the sheet.
General InformationThe Water Center’s White Sturgeon Art Gallery was established in 1999 as a showcase for nature-inspired art. Occupying two 40-foot-long corridors on the first and second floors of the spacious Water Center, the White Sturgeon exhibits the work of emerging and established Northwest artists in a variety of mediums.
At the heart of the gallery is the Water Center’s mission of educating all people in an awareness of precious local waters. Regular visitors to the White Sturgeon will see a changing variety of photography, paintings, carvings, ceramics and fiber arts, among other media, all related to the Pacific Northwest’s environment. Exhibits run for two months and are scheduled through White Sturgeon coordinator/educator, Maya Jones.
