Feb. 23-27 tree removal to impact playground and park use

February 10, 2026

A large bigleaf maple tree next to the Elizabeth Austin Playground is decaying on the inside. This means it could break or fall without warning. Due to age and condition, the tree will not recover or improve with pruning or other maintenance.

Because the tree is located next to the playground, the risk to children and park visitors is too high to leave it in place. Removing the tree is the safest option to prevent injury or damage.

During the tree removal, the playground and parts of the park will be closed to the public. The work will be done by Arborscape, a professional tree service.

It can be difficult and emotional to see a large, mature tree removed. This decision was not taken lightly and was made with safety as the top priority.

You’re Invited to a Tree Planting: Join the City’s Urban Forestry Program and help plant nine new trees in Fruit Valley Neighborhood Park on Thursday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to noon. As they grow, the new trees will help increase shade, expand canopy coverage, and support the park’s next generation of trees. Register today!
