City Manager update: Sept. 2025

September 4, 2025

September is National Preparedness Month, which means it is a perfect time to plan and take simple steps to prepare for the unexpected. At this point in my career, I have been through half a dozen FEMA-declared emergency events and have experienced what it means when nature has other ideas. My family and I had to reboot our household emergency plan a few years ago when we moved to Washington.

During an emergency, you might not have access to a grocery store, pharmacy, hospital, or other critical services. Also, in an emergency, responders may not be able to reach everyone quickly. Whether it’s severe weather, wildfire, a power outage, or an earthquake, having a plan and essentials on hand can make things a lot easier. Preparedness doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with the basics:

  • Know about the disasters that are likely to occur in our community
  • Sign up for Public Alerts to receive information in an emergency
  • Follow the City on social media to receive accurate, official information

At our Sept. 15 Council Meeting, CRESA and City staff will discuss preparedness when the City Council proclaims September National Preparedness Month in Vancouver. The City and its partners work together before, during, and after emergencies to coordinate response efforts, share information, and support residents.

We’re asking you to take the time now to prepare your household. It can make all the difference later in keeping you and your loved ones safe when it matters most. Visit Emergency Preparedness to learn more.
