Barren winter landscapes provide a chance to look closer at the often-overlooked little things in nature. In the temperate Pacific Northwest, lichens provide bursts of color and texture to the gray landscape. Join us on a slow exploration in search of lichen, moss and all the tiny things that go unseen.

Hidden Journey of Wastewater

Have you ever wondered what happens to the water that goes down your drain? Where does it end up? How is it cleaned? What should and should not go down your drains? Join us for a tour of Vancouver’s Marine Park Wastewater Treatment Plant to learn about the unseen journey of our used water.
After the treatment plant tour, we will take a nature walk to the Columbia River to learn about the riparian ecosystem and see where the clean water is released.
Tour is suitable for adults and youth 8 years and older. Tour is inside and outside and will happen rain or shine. Closed toed shoes are required. Expect to walk 2.5 miles on paved pathways and up and down flights of stairs in the treatment plant.

Sunlight and warmer temperatures are waking up the plants and stimulating growth. Explore the restored landscape adjacent to Burnt Bridge Creek while learning about native plants and their ecology. Expect to walk 2.5 miles on paved surfaces. This walk is geared toward adults and youth ages 8 and older.

Beach Cleanup at Marine Park

Join the Water Resources Education Center to help remove litter from beaches and wetlands and prevent it from polluting the Columbia River. All tools will be provided. Expect to walk 2.5 miles on uneven sandy beach areas. Volunteers will collect litter with litter pickers and carry it in buckets while walking the beach and surrounding area.
Registration is required. Sign up today!
All ages welcome. Youth under 18 must bring a signed minor consent form. Youth under 13 must have an adult guardian present.

World Water Day

Each year, World Water Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater for both humans and ecosystems. This year’s theme focuses on glacier preservation. Join us to learn how glaciers impact our freshwater systems and discover ways we can take action against climate change to help preserve them.
This family-friendly event will feature hands-on activities from local community partners, an interactive nature art project and guided nature walks to the Columbia River.
For this special occasion, the Water Center’s Exhibit Hall will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Registration not required; drop in anytime. Guided 45-minute nature walks will happen throughout the afternoon, starting at 1:30 p.m. Space is limited for the nature walks, and sign-ups will happen on a first come, first served basis. Walks are appropriate for ages 6 and older and participants should expect to walk 2 miles on uneven terrain, sandy beaches, muddy wetland areas and paved pathways.
