Trees in Vancouver

Our Urban Forestry Program aims to maximize the environmental, social and economic benefits that trees provide to those who live, work and visit Vancouver.

We focus on preserving, managing and enhancing existing trees and other vegetation while also promoting the reforestation of the urban area. Through proper permitting, active tree management and community outreach and programming, we strive to make Vancouver a greener city one tree at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Who is responsible for maintenance/removal of street trees?

As in most of the Pacific Northwest, the adjacent property owner is responsible for maintenance and removal of street trees in the City of Vancouver. Adjacent property owners are required to apply for and secure a Tree Permit from the City before beginning any work. Please email Urban Forestry or call 360-487-8332 and we will schedule a site inspection.

Do I need a permit?

There are two kinds of permits required for trees in the City of Vancouver: one for street trees and one for private trees. Failure to obtain a permit before starting work will result in a violation and monetary fines, so check for appropriate permits before removing any tree.
