Residential Solar Panel Checklist

Plans

  1. Site Plan
  2. Layout Plan
    • If located on roof, then Roof Plan
      • Location and dimensions of solar array with dimensioned pathways and clearances
      • Existing rooftop equipment, vents, and other roof penetrations
    • If freestanding solar structure, then Structural Plan
  3. Electrical Plan
    • If net metering, then Production Meter must be shown on the one-line drawing
    • Rapid Shutdown and Emergency Disconnects [IFC 1205.4]
      • Identification of rapid shutdown device(s) and control location
      • Notation of UL 3741 or UL 1741 listing for rapid shutdown systems
      • Description of shutdown activation method and compliance with NEC 690.12
    • System Labeling and Signage
      • Label locations on plans and one-line diagram, and in the field [NEC Article 690]
        • DC disconnects
        • Combiner boxes
        • Inverters and conduit
        • Rapid shutdown initiation devices [IFC 1205.4.1, 1205.4.3]
      • Warning signs on or near equipment: “WARNING—ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD—DO NOT TOUCH TERMINALS”
    • Hazard Mitigation
      • Arc-fault and ground-fault protection documentation
      • Fire-resistance rating of roof penetrations and sealing materials
      • Battery system fire safety plan (if applicable):
        • Ventilation provisions
        • Separation from combustible materials
        • Fire-rated enclosure
  4. Structural Plans (when applicable) and attachment details

Documents

  1. Signed and Dated Residential Additions, Remodels, Accessory Structures Application Form (PDF)
  2. Manufacturer’s installation instructions for V = 97 mph wind speed or engineering
  3. Product Specifications
    • Photovoltaic panels and modules shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 1703
    • Inverters shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 1741
    • Racking / mounting system – UL 2703
    • Systems connected to the utility grid shall use inverters listed for utility interaction
  4. Engineering required if total dead load of modules, supports, mountings, raceways, and all other appurtenances weigh more than 4 pounds per square foot.
  5. Signed OTC Building Permit Checklist for Residential Solar Photovoltaic Systems Form (PDF)
    • On line 9, enter total dead load of system (lbs/ft2)
